Welcome to What’s in Your Skin Routine? The Science and Safety Behind Your Cosmetics [MOOC000716].

This non-credit course is open for public with estimation completion time 24 h. The course is presented in English with SELF PACED MODE through asynchronous video materials.

This course introduces the public to the science behind daily cosmetic products, helping society to understand what actually goes into the skincare products mostly used. With the rapid growth of the beauty industry and the influence of social media trends, consumers are increasingly exposed to a wide variety of products and claims. Thus, scientific literacy is needed so participants can have a deeper knowledge of cosmetic products from the technology and safety perspective. The topics include an introduction to cosmetic science and ingredients, which explain the definition of cosmetics and how they differ from therapeutic products, as well as functional components as well as additional ingredients such as emollients, humectants, surfactants, and preservatives. Further, to provide a broader perspective, the course also explains cosmetic regulations - especially in Indonesia. Finally, the course discussed the gap between marketing claims and scientific evidence, helping participants critically evaluate labels such as “natural”, “organic”, or “dermatologist tested.” At the end of each session, participants are expected to complete assignments and receive the Certificate of Completion.

By the end of this course, participants are expected to have a deeper understanding of cosmetic ingredients and formulations. By increasing the ability to evaluate cosmetic labels and marketing claims critically, participants would improve their awareness of cosmetic safety and responsible product use.

Through a series of learning materials and assessments on cosmetic formulations, their safety & regulations, and marketing advertisements, it is expected that by the end of this course, participants will gain practical skills to be aware of cosmetic ingredient lists and become more informed, thus able to have critical knowledge for a more safe and responsible cosmetic use.
