Heritage Architecture has become a significant global value for future sustainable cities and their people. In this context, stories, precedents, and standards of architectural heritage had developed mostly in the northern hemisphere, mainly Europe, North America, and East Asia. Information on Indonesia's architectural heritage is largely unknown and limited.

“Heritage Architecture in Indonesia” introduces heritage as tangible and intangible cultural values and the historical significance of historic buildings, sites, and areas in Indonesia. In this course, students will learn about architecture in the past, its relevance in today’s contexts, and efforts to safeguard its legacy for future generations. The discussion covers:

1. Basic principles in heritage;
2. Heritage architecture in Indonesia;
3. The concept of tangible and intangible cultural heritage in Indonesia; and
4. Documenting heritage architecture in Indonesia.

The course reflects on relevant international examples of UNESCO's “Outstanding Universal Value” (OUV) for cultural conservation and preservation.

To generate further discussion and critical thinking among students, the course provides relevant readings about heritage architecture and regulation, suggested field exploration, quizzes, tasks, and online lectures.
